For more than twenty years, Mike has represented employers in court and before federal and state agencies in more than twenty-five states, before at least four U.S. courts of appeal, and in several state supreme courts. Before co-founding Lorenger & Carnell, Mike was a partner in the Labor & Employment Group of the global law firm Hogan & Hartson (now HoganLovells).

Mike graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa in 1991 where he majored in journalism. In 1995, he received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served on the editorial and managing boards of the Virginia Law Review.

Mike, his wife Carrie, and their three children reside in Alexandria, Virginia.

We are committed to providing our clients with the highest quality service in both litigation and counseling.  We represent employers in all manner of employment litigation, both before the EEOC and similar state and local agencies, and in state and federal courts across the country. In addition to litigation arising out of claims of discrimination, workplace harassment, wage and hour law violations, leave entitlements, and wrongful termination, we also handle cases involving complex employment contracts, including cases seeking and resisting the enforcement of restrictive covenants. In each matter, we combine aggressive but efficient litigation with strategic diplomatic negotiation.

Our attorneys also act as counselors, working with our clients to help them stay on the right side of the law and avoid litigation whenever possible.  Our clients consider us part of the Human Resources team, and they benefit from our advice – from the recruiting and application process through termination, and everything in between.

Lorenger & Carnell PLC was founded in 2007 in order to provide employers with top-notch legal services at small-firm rates. Since its inception, the firm’s practice has been focused on representing employers in both litigation and counseling.

Before striking out on their own, Susan Carnell and Mike Lorenger served as partners in the Labor & Employment Group of the Washington, D.C. law firm of Hogan & Hartson LLP (now Hogan Lovells), where they represented national and international companies in all aspects of labor and employment litigation, counseling and training. Over the course of their “big firm” practice, Susan and Mike found that the ever-increasing cost of legal services limited the preventative advice companies sought and made it cost-prohibitive to defend against even meritless claims. In response to these changing market forces, they opened a small boutique law firm dedicated solely to the representation of employers in employment-related matters and disputes.  Christine Burke came to the firm in 2015 from Hogan Lovells, where she herself had spent over a decade in the firm’s Labor & Employment Group, first as an Associate and then as Counsel.

Drawing on over fifty years of combined experience, acquired in representing employers ranging in size from a few employees to a few hundred thousand, Lorenger & Carnell provides its clients with the same capable training, practical advice, and aggressive litigation defense offered by the largest law firms, but at a fraction of the cost.  Our clients are located both in the Washington, DC area and nationwide, in almost every industry, including hospitality, energy, aerospace, construction, media and broadcasting, defense, sports, information technology, and education.

“Michael Lorenger is adept at handling a broad range of employment disputes. He has in-depth knowledge of representing employers in both administrative and courtroom proceedings.”
