As a result, we work closely with businesses and individuals as they maneuver through complex regulations, ever changing statutes and legislation, and increased government scrutiny. We also pride ourselves on being proactive in our partnership with clients to help companies prevent problems before they arise.  We provide counsel related to wage/hour and benefits issues, assist in the development of personnel and employment-related policies, procedures and handbooks and provide in-house trainings to management and personnel on topics such as harassment, FMLA, investigations, documentation and best practices for hiring and interviewing. On a day-to-day basis, we provide guidance to human resource professionals and business managers and owners on the many different laws encompassing employees’ rights and employers’ obligations. Our goals are to help our clients create and maintain a positive environment in their workplace and to support them in anticipating and preventing employment problems, as well as assisting them to resolve current issues.

Should the need for litigation counsel arise, our team is prepared to handle a full range of employment-related litigation matters, in all agencies and courts in Kentucky and Indiana. The Kightlinger & Gray Employment Practice Area has experience defending and prosecuting employment litigation, individual and class action lawsuits from private parties, and governmental agencies in employment-related matters. Our experience speaks for itself—in the last ten years, we have prepared and successfully defended hundreds of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and state agency charges; represented dozens of clients in state and federal employment lawsuits successfully obtaining dismissals through settlements, dispositive motions and trials.

Since 1946, when Erle A. Kightlinger and Mark W. Gray began practicing law together in Indianapolis, the firm’s mission has been to ensure that the interests of our clients are vigorously promoted in a professional, ethical manner. Although their early practice was general in nature, Erle and Mark placed a strong emphasis on litigation skills. Erle and Mark believed that a litigation background would better enable the firm’s attorneys to advise clients on how to avoid the costs and uncertainties of lawsuits when possible and how to minimize the expense and risk when litigation cannot be avoided. This perspective allowed the firm to expand into a broad range of non-litigation practice areas and business advisory services in addition to its traditional litigation practice. More than 60 years later, that mission—coupled with deep industry experience and a robust reputation to match—remains.

Kightlinger & Gray, LLP is well equipped to meet the needs of clients in both the public and private sectors of all sizes. The firm has over 60 attorneys, making it large enough to handle any size matter, yet small enough to provide personalized, responsive service. Because of Kightlinger & Gray, LLP’s membership and participation in various national and international legal organizations, including CLM, DTCI, DRI, Lexwork International and The Harmonie Group, we are also able to assist our clients who may be seeking representation in a specific substantive area or jurisdiction that we do not serve.
